The Aperture and Stake-Geometry Weakness Lists, Merged into One

A synthesis across Aperture Ethics and Stake-Geometry

What This File Is

Aperture ethics and stake-geometry each carry their own list of known weaknesses. Because stake-geometry was built as the successor to aperture ethics (see the "Relationship to Aperture Ethics" section of Stake-Geometry), the two lists overlap heavily. This file merges them into one.

The method is the one the project settled on. Stake-geometry's numbered list is the base. Each aperture weakness is folded into the stake-geometry weakness it corresponds to; where the two frameworks approach the same weakness from different angles, both angles are kept. Each entry is tagged for scope — shared by both frameworks, unique to one, or originating in one and resolved by the other. The one aperture weakness that the move to stake-geometry actually solved is listed as such, at the end.

The merge is cleaner than either list alone suggests, and the cleanness is itself the finding. Every aperture weakness finds a home in the stake-geometry numbering. There are no orphan aperture weaknesses left unsolved. This means the move from aperture to stake-geometry did not resolve the deep weaknesses; it mostly relocated or renamed them. The successor is more defensible at the level of articulation — more precise, more structured, free of the teleological language — but exactly as exposed at the level of grounding. The honest one-line summary of the relationship is: same foundations, better articulation.

A note on the framework's commitments. Stake-Geometry now carries an explicit Structural Framework Commitments section that names the load-bearing entailments most often missed by readers extrapolating from the dimensional taxonomy alone — that aperture-status is the binary threshold and not a continuous quantity; that the protective principles are not density-indexed; that density is not a quantity to maximize; that conflict-weighting is type-matched rather than aperture-matched; that the proxy duty is a Tier 2 principle and not a charity; and that density is first-personal rather than third-personal. Several of the entries below lean on those commitments, and #2 (aggregation) and #5 (status-scaling) are narrowed by them rather than left intact.


The Merged List

1. The Is/Ought Gap, and the Founding Axiom

Scope: shared by both frameworks, approached from two different angles. Permanent.

This is the deepest weakness and the most crowded entry, because each framework brings a different bridge across the same gap, and each bridge is admitted to be persuasive rather than airtight.

The two bridges are not redundant. They are strongest on different parts of the problem (see The Grounding Skeptic, which splits the challenge into three readings). Aperture ethics' transcendental move does its best work on one's own collapse — Reading A. Stake-geometry's consistency move is the one that reaches another's collapse — Reading B. Read together, the predecessor is not simply superseded; it supplies the half of the bridge stake-geometry is weakest on.

A note on how deep this goes. This gap is shared by every naturalistic grounding of ethics — consciousness, sentiment, human nature, and (read as a natural fact about agents) rational agency alike. The only groundings that escape it are those that posit brute, underived normative facts: divine command and secular non-natural realism (the Moore–Parfit line). Both escape by the same move, and both pay for it — religion with a universality that has never been exhibited (see Network Universality), Platonism with the "queerness" problem of how a physical mind could access mind-independent normative facts. Even an emergent, convergence-based route to near-universal principles — mathematical constants "baked into" a large enough network — stays on the naturalistic side of this line: it is a maximally determinate Tier 2, not a Tier 3 escape, and so inherits the gap rather than crossing it. The framework, being naturalistic, has no exit. This is why the weakness is permanent rather than provisional. 2. Aggregation

Scope: shared by both frameworks, inherited intact, then narrowed by the framework's explicit anti-aggregation commitments.

How do you weigh one rich stake-geometry against many impoverished ones — or, in aperture terms, one aperture's deep integrity against many apertures' mild constriction? Both frameworks phrase it almost identically: the framework identifies what matters but does not automatically solve the aggregation problem. This is the clearest case of a weakness the successor inherited without modification. Nothing in the move from aperture to stake-geometry touched it.

The Structural Framework Commitments section in Stake-Geometry narrows what this weakness actually is. The framework is explicitly not committed to maximizing aggregate stake-density across a population (density is not a quantity to maximize), and its conflict-weighting is type-matched rather than aperture-matched (moral weight is a relation between particular stakes, not a quantity apertures have more or less of). The utilitarian framing of aggregation — sum the densities, optimize the total — is therefore not the question the framework owes an answer to; it is a question the framework refuses on principle, because answering it would treat apertures as fungible quantities in a way the anchoring forbids. What remains genuinely open is the narrower problem: how does type-matched conflict-weighting resolve cases where particular stakes are asymmetric across multiple apertures and a tradeoff is forced. That is harder than the utilitarian question in a sense (no shortcut) and better-posed in another (it asks what the framework can actually answer).

3. The Dimensions, and Their Granularity

Scope: unique to stake-geometry. Refined but not closed.

Stake-geometry commits to five dimensions (dimensionality, depth, reach, coherence, responsiveness) with no principled derivation showing why five and not three or eight. Aperture ethics does not have this weakness, because it never committed to a dimensional analysis — it used a single metaphor of openness. But that is an absence of structure, not a solution: aperture avoids the problem only by being less informative, which was itself a reason to move past it. Later cross-framework work refines this weakness into a joint/bundle distinction (some dimensions are genuine joints, others bundle separable sub-capacities), converting the conceptual worry into an empirical question.

4. Measurement, and the Hard Problem

Scope: shared by both frameworks, approached from two different angles. Permanent in principle, possibly tractable in practice.

These are the metaphysical root and the practical face of one problem. The move to structural language did not escape the hard problem; it relocated it from "what is consciousness?" to "how do we measure mattering?"

5. Status-Scaling, and the Risk of Elitism

Scope: stated in stake-geometry, latent in aperture ethics. Refined into a structural defense.

If moral status scales with stake-density, the framework risks licensing troubling hierarchies — not the defensible "humans over rocks" but the dangerous "more complex minds matter more." Stake-geometry names this and offers a protective move (stake-density is not IQ or sophistication; a person who loves deeply has enormous stake-density even with reduced cognitive dimensionality). Aperture ethics did not list this weakness, but it carries the same latent risk: integrity / dilation scaling implies "wider apertures matter more" just as readily. The danger is real in both; only stake-geometry stated it.

Later cross-framework refinement sharpens the response. "Stake-density" turns out to be doing three distinct jobs in the framework — a binary threshold for aperture-status, a first-personal internal description of what mattering is like for a given aperture, and an input to conflict-weighting in narrow type-matched zero-sum cases — and the elitism worry hits only the third. The framework's other Tier 2 protective principles (don't gratuitously collapse, recognize, allow elaboration, treat symmetrically, weight by proxy, maintain conditions for future participation) are not density-indexed and apply equally to any aperture once the threshold is cleared. The bullet that does have to be bitten — that richer geometries' stakes can outweigh thinner ones' in genuinely forced type-matched conflicts — has narrow scope and explicitly rules out the policy implications (distributive preference, withdrawal of care, prenatal selection, eugenic policy, tiers of moral worth) that the elitism worry is most afraid of. The structural defense is stronger than the protective sentence in the parent document indicated, because vulnerability runs the opposite way from richness: thinner geometries can be more easily totally collapsed, and the proxy duty exists precisely to protect the populations the elitism worry is concerned about. 6. The Teleology Temptation

Scope: originates in aperture ethics; largely resolved by the move to stake-geometry, with a possible residue.

This is the one weakness that the successor actually solved rather than inherited. Aperture ethics' vocabulary — "integrity," "proper function," "dilation" — risked smuggling in teleology, the assumption that consciousness has a way it is supposed to operate. Shedding that language was an explicit motive for developing stake-geometry, which replaced the teleological metaphor with structural description (collapse and elaboration as changes in measurable dimensions, not deviations from a proper function).

The residue worth watching: "elaboration is good / collapse is bad" may still carry a faint normative-functional charge. This connects to the circularity charge discussed in The Grounding Skeptic — if the value of elaboration is built into the definitions, the framework risks restating a preference as a discovery. The defense is that the analyticity sits only at the top and the content sits in the five-dimensional taxonomy below; but the teleological residue is the place to keep checking that defense.


7. The Consolidation Counterfactual

Scope: introduced with consolidation (spine step 13), June 2026. Open.

Consolidation protects chosen narrowing from being misread as collapse, and its first mark carries the load: the narrowing must be endorsed, and the endorsement must be one that would survive restoration of full responsiveness. That is a counterfactual, and counterfactuals about other minds are hard to adjudicate from outside. A stable depression can present its flatness as chosen simplicity; a sophisticated rationalizer can present capture as discipline; and the framework's instrument for telling them apart (the underlying/experienced split of the mood layer) is itself proxy-measured. The exposure is bounded in two ways. The canonical collapses fail all three marks, not just this one, so misclassification requires fooling the responsiveness and depth marks too. And the test's direction of caution can be set by context: clinically, treat contested cases as possible collapse and keep the door open; ethically, respect the stated endorsement unless the other marks fail. But a determined misreading of one's own state, or of another's, cannot be ruled out by structure alone. This is the price of refusing to call every narrowing bad, and it is recorded here so it stays visible.


What the Merge Shows

Five of the first six entries are shared, and the one that is not (teleology) is the one stake-geometry was built to fix. Of the five shared weaknesses, two are permanent features of any naturalistic ethics (the is/ought gap and the hard problem / measurement), one is an open research question common to multi-dimensional value theories (aggregation), one is a structural-taxonomy question unique to stake-geometry (the dimensions), and one is a statement-level danger present in both (elitism).

The pattern supports a specific reading of how the two frameworks relate. They are not independent theories that happen to share problems. Aperture integrity is recoverable as the openness of a stake-geometry taken as a whole — the one-dimensional projection of the five-dimensional structure. If aperture is stake-geometry restricted to a single composite axis, then its weaknesses are necessarily stake-geometry's weaknesses seen through that projection, and the correspondence in the lists is a corollary rather than a coincidence. The successor did not leave the predecessor behind so much as absorb it, which is why it inherited almost everything — including the weaknesses.
