Quantity, Arrangement, and Movement in a Stake-Geometry

What This File Is
Picture a woman in her late seventies. Forty years ago her life held hundreds of concerns: a career, committees, friendships kept in repair, opinions about everything. Now it holds perhaps six, and she will tell you, cheerfully and with reasons, that these are the best years of her life. Almost everyone recognizes this life as enviable. A framework that called it a decline would be wrong in a way that matters: not wrong about an edge case, but wrong about something human beings reliably know.
For a while, this framework was at risk of exactly that mistake. Its account of harm is built on narrowing: the worst things that happen to a person (agony, depression, addiction, death) all shrink the field of what matters to them. From there it is one careless step to treating breadth itself as the good, every simplification as a loss, and the contented simplifier as someone to be corrected. The consolidation amendment (spine step 13) stopped the framework from taking that step. This document supplies the structural reason the stop is principled rather than polite: why a chosen narrowing was never a loss in the first place.
The model proposed here does not replace stake-geometry. It is a redescription of the same object that separates its quantity-like aspects from its shape-like aspects, the way a physical body has both a shape and a distribution of mass over that shape. The claim of the document is that the framework's evaluations should rest on the quantity-like aspects (how much mattering there is, and whether it can still move) and never on the count of things mattering, which turns out to be partly an artifact of bookkeeping. One limit is stated at the outset and fenced in detail below: this is a way of seeing the structure precisely, not a procedure for measuring anyone.
The Primitives
The model describes a stake-geometry with four primitives.
Support. The set of things that carry any mattering at all for the aperture: the people, projects, places, ideas, and conditions over which its stakes are spread. The support is what the geometry is about.
Mass. How much mattering sits on each element of the support, and, summed over the whole, how much mattering there is in total. Mass is the model's central quantity, and it is extensive: when two stakes merge into one, their masses add. One raindrop plus one raindrop makes one bigger raindrop; the count went down, the water added correctly, and the water was always the point.
Arrangement. How the mass is organized: whether the stakes align, hold tension in productive relation, or work at cross purposes. Arrangement is a property of the distribution, not a quantity of it. No amount of mass information settles how well the mass cooperates.
Mobility. Whether the distribution can move: whether mass can shift to new support, redistribute under evidence and circumstance, and re-spread after concentrating. Mobility is a property of the dynamics, not of any single moment.
A note on the water image, and its boundary. Raindrops, pooling, and evaporation carry the first two primitives well, and the model uses them freely. The image does not carry arrangement (water does not cooperate or conflict with itself) and is not asked to. Where arrangement matters below, it is stated plainly.
Mapping to the Five Dimensions
The five dimensions of stake-geometry read off the model as follows.

Two consequences are immediate. First, depth and dimensionality are revealed as two coordinates of a single object, the distribution: one is how many places the mass sits, the other is how much sits in each place. They were never fully independent capacities, which bears on the bundle suspicion recorded in Joints and Bundles and is flagged there. Second, coherence and responsiveness sit outside the mass entirely. They cannot be bought with quantity, and no redistribution of mass, however favorable, substitutes for them. This is the model's restatement of the corpus's existing rule that the integrative ceiling and the capacity to update are what make richness safe.
The Three Processes, Typed
With the primitives in place, the framework's processes stop being example-lists and acquire signatures. Two parameters do all the work: what happened to the mass, and what happened to the mobility.
Collapse: mass loss, mobility loss, or both. The canonical collapses are four distinct operations that the old single list ran together:
- Depression is mass loss: evaporation. The count of concerns can be fully intact while the amount of mattering on them dries up. This sharpens the project's flagship clinical claim: depression is not grief, because grief is mass intact under painful reorganization, while depression is the mass itself going.
- Trauma is regional mobility loss: parts of the distribution freeze and stop being reachable, while mass elsewhere may be untouched.
- Agony is forced transient concentration: the whole distribution is seized onto one point with mass intact, which is why it reverses when the pain ends.
- Addiction is concentration plus freeze: mass pools onto one stake and the distribution loses the ability to re-spread. This is why addiction mimics chosen simplicity from the outside and is its opposite underneath.
- Death is total mass annihilation, and totalitarianism is redistribution and amputation imposed from outside the geometry.
Elaboration: mass growth or mobility growth. The five mechanisms in Goods map onto the model nearly one to one: adding a dimension is mass extension onto new support; deepening is mass growth on existing support; extending reach is spreading the distribution further over the world; coherence-work is rearrangement; modifying responsiveness is a mobility change. Love is the special case of coupling, in which another aperture's distribution is partially internalized and imports both new support and new mass at intensity.
Consolidation: mass-conserving, mobility-preserving concentration. The same water pooled into fewer, deeper places. The three marks of spine step 13 read directly off the model: conserved depth is mass conservation (mark three); preserved responsiveness is live mobility (mark two); and the endorsement mark (mark one) is the one the mathematics cannot carry, because no property of a distribution certifies that its bearer chose it. Mark one stays first-personal and qualitative, adjudicated through the restoration test in Mood and Sentiment, and any presentation of this model that implies otherwise is overclaiming.
The mood gain-layer also locates cleanly: mood is a multiplicative modulation on the experienced distribution while the underlying mass is intact, which is the model's form of the underlying/experienced split that the depth and mood documents already draw.
The Individuation Principle
How many stakes a person has is partly a fact about them and partly a fact about how the caring is divided up. The count is scheme-relative in a way the amount is not, and the model makes this precise with a distinction between two kinds of count-change.
Re-description changes the bookkeeping and nothing else. One person's "I care about justice" and another's itemized list of forty justice-concerns may be the same mattering counted differently, as 1 + 1 = 10 in binary is the same quantity in different notation. Evaluation must be invariant under re-description, because nothing real changed.
Merging and splitting change the geometry itself. Two clouds drift together and make one cloud: 1 + 1 = 1 in the count, while the water adds correctly underneath. By the independence criterion in Dimensionality, stakes that can no longer vary separately are one stake, so when the elder's separate concerns fuse into something like the family's flourishing, the count truly drops (1 + 1 = 1), the masses add (1 + 1 = 2), and the merged stake typically gains reach. This is a real structural change at conserved mass: consolidation, when the marks hold.
The principle that follows is the document's central claim: evaluation may rest only on individuation-invariant quantities, and those are mass and mobility. A framework that rewarded or penalized raw breadth would be rewarding a bookkeeping choice. Direction-neutrality about breadth, introduced as an amendment to the positive principle in Tiered Values, is therefore not a tolerant concession but a requirement of well-formedness.
This also shrinks two recorded open problems without resolving them. The missing cardinal metric for dimensionality, and the fuzziness of the independence criterion at the margins (Dimensionality, open problems), cost much less once nothing evaluative rests on getting the count right. And the bundle suspicion about dimensionality in Joints and Bundles gains a candidate explanation: the count was never a standalone capacity, but one coordinate of the distribution that depth is the other coordinate of.
Temperature and Heat: the Units Question
Before any quantity can be measured, its type has to be identified, and that step is usually the hard conceptual work. The historical parallel is heat before thermometry: real progress came when temperature (intensive, how hot at a point) was separated from heat (extensive, how much in total), long before either had reliable units. The mass model performs that separation for mattering. Total mass is the extensive quantity; depth is the intensive one. Naive breadth-counting kept misfiring because it tracked neither.
What the model fixes is not a unit but the constraints any future unit must satisfy: additive under merging, invariant under re-description, anchored in the first-personal character of mattering. These constraints have teeth while unitless, because they rule proposals out. Any metric that penalizes count is malformed; any metric that ranks whole lives by externally assessed totals runs against the framework's first-personal anchoring of density.
On comparison across apertures, the document records the framework's current position and an open disagreement, both honestly. The current commitments (Stake-Geometry, Structural Framework Commitments) forbid summing mass across apertures and forbid using external density assessments as worth-rankings; those fences hold regardless of what measurement turns out to be possible. Whether a common unit across persons is impossible in principle, or merely unconstructed so far, is a further question the framework does not need to settle now, and the authors of this corpus are not of one mind on it. What can be said precisely is that a cross-person unit, if one were found, would license comparison without licensing aggregation: the anti-aggregation commitments constrain the use of any measure, not its existence. Within a single aperture, comparative judgments over time (more than before, less than before, conserved through this change) are all the three processes require, and they are available now.
What the Model Buys in Application
The instrument. A scoring scheme built on the model reports mass and mobility trajectories rather than treating low breadth as deficit. A respondent with few, deep, live stakes profiles as consolidated, and only mass loss or mobility loss profiles as collapse. This is the concrete fix for the interpretation risk flagged when consolidation entered the framework.
Clinical reading. The typed signatures are bedside-usable distinctions: flat affect with intact concern-count suggests evaporation (depression); narrowed life with hot remaining stakes and an endorsement that survives the restoration test suggests consolidation; narrowed life with frozen redistribution suggests capture. The mental health applications inherit these directly.
Conflict-weighting. The framework's type-matched weighting compares particular stakes, never whole geometries. In model terms, a forced conflict compares the masses at issue on each side, which is well-formed without any cross-person total. The decision procedure (spine step 29) gains precision at clause (c): the master-process question becomes, what happens to each party's mass and mobility, and how gratuitously.
Fences
Four, stated bluntly.
- No measurement claim. The measurement weakness (Unified Weaknesses #4) applies in full. There is no procedure for assigning numbers to mass. The model is structural: it fixes what kind of quantity mattering is and what any future measure must respect.
- No cross-aperture summation. Mass is defined per-geometry. Summing it across apertures, or maximizing its population total, is forbidden by the Structural Framework Commitments and would hand back exactly the utilitarian currency the framework refuses.
- Mark one stays human. The endorsement mark of consolidation is not derivable from any property of the distribution. The model covers marks two and three; the first remains first-personal, with the restoration test as its discipline and the Consolidation Counterfactual (Unified Weaknesses #7) as its recorded exposure.
- Model, not metaphysics. Nothing here claims that mattering literally is a measure over a support. The claim is that the framework's structural commitments are exactly captured by one, which is what makes the vocabulary precise and the distinctions checkable in form.
Known Weaknesses
Pseudo-precision risk. Formal vocabulary can make unmeasured claims look measured. The fences above are the control, and any application that quotes the model's terms while ignoring fence 1 is misusing it.
The split may itself be a bundle. The model treats mass, arrangement, and mobility as cleanly separable. Real geometries may not separate them: sustained incoherence plausibly destroys mass over time, and frozen mobility plausibly prevents mass formation. If the primitives interact strongly, the typed signatures blur at the edges. The joint/bundle method (illustrative dissociation now, correlational data owed) applies to the model's own primitives.
The fragility question. The model declares breadth evaluatively neutral at fixed mass and mobility, but a one-stake geometry loses everything when its single object is lost, where a ten-stake geometry of equal mass would not. If that fragility difference is a real evaluative difference, direction-neutrality needs a qualifier. The model's candidate answer is that fragility is an expected-mass and mobility fact (a live distribution can re-spread after loss; a frozen one cannot), not a count fact, so the marks already capture it. Whether that answer survives hard cases is open.
The open unit disagreement. Recorded above: whether cross-person measurement is impossible in principle or an unsolved problem. The document deliberately does not settle it.
What would challenge this view. A demonstrated case in which two geometries agree in mass, arrangement, and mobility and still differ in how things are going for their bearers would show the primitives are incomplete. A demonstrated evaluative difference between re-descriptions of the same geometry would be fatal to the individuation principle, and is the cleanest single target a critic should aim at.
Relation to the Primary Axiom
The axiom holds that if something matters to someone, that mattering is real and deserves to be taken seriously. The axiom is a threshold claim and carries no quantity; the model supplies the quantity-shape of what crosses the threshold. Mattering arrives as a distribution: so much, on these things, arranged this way, able to move or not. The axiom dignifies the water, not the drops, which is why the framework's seriousness about a person does not waver when their caring pools into fewer places. And the model returns the favor at the axiom's darkest application: what makes total collapse the gravest harm is not that a count went to zero but that the water is gone, and with it everything the axiom was protecting.
Summary
The mass model redescribes a stake-geometry with four primitives: support (what is cared about), mass (how much, an extensive quantity that adds under merging), arrangement (how it is organized), and mobility (whether it can move). Dimensionality and depth become two coordinates of one distribution; coherence and responsiveness sit outside the mass as structural and dynamical properties. The three processes acquire signatures in two parameters: collapse is mass loss or mobility loss (depression as evaporation, trauma as regional freeze, agony as forced transient concentration, addiction as concentration plus freeze); elaboration is mass or mobility growth; consolidation is mass-conserving, mobility-preserving concentration, with its endorsement mark explicitly beyond the mathematics. The individuation principle does the philosophical work: counts are scheme-relative, evaluation may rest only on mass and mobility, and direction-neutrality about breadth is therefore a requirement of well-formedness rather than a concession. On units, the model is the temperature/heat step: type identified, constraints fixed, measurement absent, with the cross-person question recorded as open. Four fences (no measurement claim, no cross-aperture summation, mark one stays human, model not metaphysics) keep the precision honest.
