Apertures, Stake-Geometry, and the Treatment of Non-Human Minds


What this document is

The foundational documents established where value comes from (aperturality), how it is weighted in any given case (stake-geometry), how privately mattering apertures produce shared values (network universality), how that content sorts into tiers (tiered values), and how the structural principles connect to the moral content human traditions have already produced (applied ethics). What none of them did at length is apply the framework to the largest population of apertures on the planet that cannot speak for itself: non-human animals.

This piece does that work. It asks whether animals are apertures at all, describes the characteristic shape of an animal's stake-geometry, works through the hard case at the edge of the felt/functional line — the insect, with bumble bees as the worked example — and then derives what the framework actually entails for how humans should treat animals. It closes by being explicit about what the framework settles and what it leaves open.

The point, as with the rest of the applied work, is not to add new foundations but to show that the framework has the diagnostic power to handle a domain where human moral intuitions are notoriously unstable, and to make explicit what follows from the structural commitments already in place.


Are animals apertures?

In the framework's vocabulary, an aperture is a locus in reality where the universe is disclosed to something — synonymous with phenomenal consciousness, but named for its structural function rather than its felt quality. The original statement of the view drew the line with two examples on each side: a rock is not an aperture, a thermostat is not an aperture, a suffering animal is an aperture, a dreaming human is an aperture.

This placement is deliberate and consequential. In the framework, a genuinely sentient animal is not a borderline case to be argued into the circle of moral concern. It is a paradigm aperture — offered, alongside the dreaming human, as one of the clear positive instances against which the rock and the thermostat are contrasted. The interesting question is therefore not whether animals are apertures but what shape their aperturality takes, and how much moral weight that shape carries.

The decisive distinction the framework leans on is between felt stakes and functional stakes. A thermostat "cares" about temperature in a purely mechanical sense; its stakes are functional, and it is no aperture. A dog cares about food in a way that involves subjective experience; its stakes are felt, and it is. Only felt stakes are morally relevant, and felt stakes simply are aperturality viewed from the side of value. So the question "is this animal an aperture?" is identical to the question "does this animal have felt stakes — is there something it is like to be it?" That is an empirical question about the creature, not a stipulation the framework can settle by fiat.


The shape of an animal aperture

Stake-geometry, the successor to the bare aperture metaphor, replaces the single image of an "opening" with five dimensions of felt mattering: dimensionality (how many independent things can matter), depth (how strongly any one thing can matter), reach (how far stakes extend across time, space, and abstraction), coherence (whether stakes align internally), and responsiveness (whether stakes update on new information). Animals have all five, but with a characteristic profile that distinguishes them from typical human geometries:

The other three dimensions vary by species, but the general picture is of a geometry that is real, felt, and morally weighty, yet thinner and more locally bounded than a flourishing human's. This is what "aperture in animals" amounts to: animals are genuine loci of disclosure with lower-dimensional, shorter-reaching stake-geometries.

Two cautions the framework insists on keep this from sliding into a crude hierarchy. First, stake-density is a profile across dimensions, not a single number, and it is emphatically not a measure of intelligence or sophistication — the framework's own protective example is that a human with severe cognitive impairment who loves deeply has enormous stake-density even where cognitive dimensionality is reduced. The same caution applies across the species line: depth and the capacity to suffer do not track cleverness. Second, the framework explicitly flags the risk of elitism (Known Weakness #5 of stake-geometry) — the danger that scaling moral status with stake-density gets used to justify troubling hierarchies. The framework's response is not to deny that geometries differ in richness but to insist that difference in weight never licenses treating a thinner geometry as weightless.


The hard case: do bumble bees have aperture?

Insects are where the felt/functional line is genuinely hard to draw, and the bumble bee is the cleanest worked example. The framework does not answer the question by fiat — and that restraint is a feature. It converts "do bees have aperture?" into a sharp, empirical question: do bees have felt stakes, or only functional ones? Is there something it is like to be a bee, or is the bee an extraordinarily sophisticated thermostat — impressive behavior with no one home?

What the framework supplies is not the answer but the method for reaching it. A Tier 2 principle reads: recognize other apertures when there is evidence of them — update recognition when evidence appears, and do not maintain willed blindness once the evidence is in. This forbids the convenient move of denying sentience precisely because acknowledging it would be inconvenient, and it directs attention to what the science of bee cognition actually shows rather than to prior assumption.

The evidence has been accumulating in the aperture-suggesting direction, though it remains contested among researchers working on the same data. Bumble bees display nociception and what have been read as pain-related motivational trade-offs — in some studies they will accept noxious stimuli in exchange for a sufficiently large reward, which has been interpreted as weighing one stake against another rather than reacting reflexively. They show cognitive biases that some take as candidate signatures of affective states: bees given an unexpected sugar reward make more "optimistic" judgments about ambiguous cues, a pattern used as a marker of emotion-like states across other species. There are plausible reports of apparent play — rolling small wooden balls with no food reward and no evident function. And they show selective attention, rapid associative learning, simple numerical competence, and social learning of novel tasks from other bees. Whether this adds up to aperturality is exactly what is disputed; what the framework can say is that this is the kind of evidence the recognition principle requires be weighed rather than waved away.

Run through the framework, the most defensible verdict is calibrated rather than categorical: bumble bees are a serious candidate aperture, and probably a genuine but very thin one. If they have felt stakes — and the behavioral evidence points in that direction without settling it — their stake-geometry is low in dimensionality, present-tense and local in reach, and minimal in coherence and abstraction, but real. That places them squarely where the proxy principle applies (developed below): beings whose stakes are real but whose participation in the network is impossible.

Two caveats from the framework's own list of weaknesses keep the verdict honest. The hard problem inheritance: because the framework builds value on consciousness — the most metaphysically mysterious feature of reality — it cannot prove the felt/functional question either way. And measurement is extremely hard (stake-geometry's Known Weakness #4): we have proxies such as behavioral richness, responsiveness to novelty, and pain trade-offs, but nothing approaching a direct measurement of felt mattering. So the framework's output for bees is "treat as a likely aperture and weight its thin geometry by proxy," not "demonstrated aperture beyond doubt."

The contrast that makes this concrete: a floor-mapping robot and a foraging bumble bee can look behaviorally comparable from a distance, but the framework predicts they fall on opposite sides of the felt/functional line — and the mounting evidence of pain trade-offs, mood-like biases, and play is precisely what would justify drawing that line with the bee on the aperture side and the robot on the thermostat side.


From status to treatment

Establishing that animals are apertures, and that bees are probable thin ones, fixes their moral status. The framework's distinctive contribution is to derive treatment from that status through a small number of structural levers rather than through a list of moral demands. Four do the work.

Proportional weighting, not a binary

Because moral status scales with stake-density and profile, the framework rejects both "animals do not count" and "all sentient beings count equally." A being's claim on a moral agent tracks the richness of its felt stake-geometry. The governing Tier 2 principle is weight stakes proportionally to their geometry when conflicts arise. So when human and animal interests genuinely collide, the human's far richer geometry will often outweigh — but "outweigh" never collapses into "count for zero," and the proportional-weighting principle cuts the other way when the stakes are mismatched in the opposite direction: a trivial human interest (mild convenience or pleasure) set against a severe animal stake (agony or death) is exactly the configuration in which proportional weighting can favor the animal.

The proxy duty

Animals cannot participate in the network across which shared values are negotiated. They cannot argue, consent, reciprocate, or hold others to account. The framework refuses to let non-participation become non-membership. Its Tier 2 principle is explicit: where an aperture cannot participate, weight its stake-geometry by proxy — the inability to negotiate does not equal the absence of stakes, and recognition can be asymmetric but real. This is the load-bearing move for animal ethics. It places an active obligation on the beings who can participate — humans — to represent animal stakes within the network, rather than treating the animals' inability to represent themselves as grounds for ignoring them. The applied-ethics inventory names this directly under the recognition principle: treat marginal cases — infants, the severely impaired, animals, possibly artificial systems — with weight proportional to their geometry rather than dismissing them for failing to participate fully.

The gratuitousness test

The central prohibition is not "do not cause animal suffering." It is do not gratuitously collapse felt stake-geometries. The qualifier carries the weight. Non-gratuitous collapse — the framework's standing example is a surgeon causing pain to prevent worse pain — is permitted; collapse imposed without sufficient reason is the violation. This is where the framework gets its grip on real practices.

Industrial animal agriculture is the sharpest case. Confinement is dimensionality-and-reach collapse; slaughter is total collapse of the geometry; and at the scale practiced, this is imposed largely for marginal human gains in cost, convenience, and taste. On the gratuitousness test that reads as close to gratuitous as the framework's vocabulary permits, which makes the framework strongly critical of the practice in its current form. By contrast, genuine necessity — subsistence, or a real conflict of survival-level stakes — is exactly what the word "gratuitous" is built to exempt. The framework does not pronounce a single verdict on every dietary or economic choice; it locates the moral question precisely, at how gratuitous the human benefit actually is, and that is where honest disagreement lives. What it rules out firmly is the position that animal suffering imposed for trivial reasons carries no moral cost at all. (Relations Between Apertures develops the meat case further through the relational lens — how industrial systems sever and hide the eater's relation to the eaten — and reaches the same gradient verdict by a different route.)

The recognition duty and precautionary asymmetry

The recognition principle — update on evidence of apertures, do not maintain willed blindness — bites hardest precisely where geometry is thin and the felt/functional question is unsettled, which is to say on insects and other contested minds. Combined with the framework's admission that felt mattering cannot be directly measured, it points toward a precautionary asymmetry: mistaking a real aperture for a thermostat is a worse error than mistaking a thermostat for an aperture, because only the first error gratuitously collapses something that actually mattered. Relations Between Apertures states this as a standing methodological principle — under genuine uncertainty about whether an aperture is present, treat the case as if one may be, weight the resulting stakes accordingly, and update as evidence develops — and names the bumble bee as its live case. So as the evidence for invertebrate sentience accumulates, the framework's recommended stance is to extend tentative proxy weight upward rather than to withhold it pending a proof that the hard problem may make permanently unavailable.

For bees concretely, this yields: do not harm them gratuitously, and treat practices that cause mass collapse — broad-spectrum pesticides, large-scale habitat destruction — as carrying real moral cost, individually thin but aggregated across vast numbers, rather than as merely an ecological or instrumental loss. This is reinforced from a second direction by the Tier 2 principle maintain the conditions for future participation, which is where the framework anchors environmental ethics structurally rather than sentimentally. Pollinators accordingly receive weight along two channels at once: as probable (if thin) apertures in their own right, and as part of the living substrate whose continuation keeps the wider network of apertures viable. The two channels converge on the same practical conclusion without the framework having to decide how much of the weight is intrinsic and how much is substrate-protective.


What the framework settles and what it does not

The framework deliberately stops short of a decision procedure. It admits that aggregation is unsolved (stake-geometry's Known Weakness #2): it cannot say how many thin bee-geometries equal one rich mammalian geometry, or when a large number of small stakes outweighs a few large ones. It admits that measurement is hard, so that the felt/functional verdict for any contested species is provisional and evidence-tracking rather than final. What it provides is the shape of right treatment — proportional weight, proxy representation for those who cannot negotiate, a precautionary recognition duty under uncertainty, and a ban on gratuitous collapse — and then sends the moral agent to the empirical facts of each case to supply the content.

This is the same division of labor the framework draws everywhere: Tier 2 fixes the constraints, and the particular situation, read honestly, fills in what to do. On animals the constraints are enough to rule out indifference and cruelty decisively, to make industrial-scale gratuitous collapse hard to defend, and to bring even contested minds like the bumble bee inside the circle of proxy concern. They are not enough to dissolve the genuinely hard trade-offs, and the framework's strength is that it presents those as reasoning problems to be worked rather than pretending to have already solved them.


Summary

Animals are not a borderline case for the framework but a paradigm of aperturality: a suffering animal is offered as a clear positive instance of a locus where reality is disclosed to a subject. Their stake-geometries are real and felt but characteristically thinner than human ones — lower in dimensionality, shorter in reach — and the framework guards against turning that difference in richness into a license for treating thinner geometries as weightless. Bumble bees sit at the contested edge: the felt/functional question is unsettled, but converging evidence of pain trade-offs, mood-like states, and play makes them a serious candidate aperture, probably a genuine thin one, owed proxy weight under a precautionary reading of the recognition principle.

From that status the framework derives treatment through four structural levers — proportional weighting, the proxy duty for non-participants, the gratuitousness test, and the recognition duty with its precautionary asymmetry. Together these rule out indifference and cruelty, place industrial animal agriculture under serious structural criticism, and extend tentative but real moral weight to contested minds, while leaving the hardest trade-offs as open reasoning problems the framework constrains but does not close. As with the rest of the applied work, the contribution is not a new foundation but a single vocabulary in which what humans owe animals follows from structural facts about consciousness rather than from sentiment or arbitrary command.
